Not for the first time, I started writing a short story that began mundanely and then turned really weird, really fast. Supernatural phenomena? Murderous mothers? No big deal.
Incidentally, I've also just finished Ann Cummins's Red Ant House (thanks, Flo!), which didn't hurt. I enjoy her structure: the ordinary, the interruption of something strange and frequently twisted, the ordinary now no longer in tact. I took it in. Immersion, if you will. We'll see where this story goes.
